The worst ever display by an Argyle team. It's not good enough to be sat 92nd in the football league for the first time, but to be beaten by a team 3 leagues below takes the biscuit. A team of non-professionals knocked the stuffing out of a so called professional team and then kicked it's twitching corpse to death. An event that is too familiar - from Bignot's own stupidity causing him to be sent off, through to the clueless 'what's this round thing and where does it go?' style of football, to the ingrained 'oh shit they've scored, no chance now' attitude. Currently, there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Well done to Stourbridge, the best team won.

Stourbridge the Revenge?

Stourbridge are the favourites, and probably quite rightly so., especially as they drew 3-3 and were leading for most of the match. At the moment, the might of the Pilgrims is as strong as a dead ant, and the FA Cup game has potential for an embarrassing morale damaging defeat, with suspensions and injuries. On the one hand the money is welcomed especially if the right draw comes along, but with Argyle sinking out of the league without a trace, the age-old cup vs league argument has even more precedence. Both teams will need drive and determination to win, and Stourbridge probably have more.

A Stour Point

How embarrassing, L1 Argyle very nearly knocked out the FA Cup in Round 1 proper by a non league team, but as I said before kick off, that's Argyle's form. It was very lucky to have secured a goal in the dying minutes rather than concede like normal. Though it was an action packed game with 6 goals, Argyle coming back twice, a late penalty and two sendings off - the bookings are stacking up for the Greens with 3 suspensions for next week' game at Torquay, and again not for the first time discipline has been a problem and impacted on a fragile squad. Stourbridge are surely going to look to be the more confident at taking their chances in the replay at Stourbridge 22 November, maybe even be the favourites, because that was a far from impressive game.

Magic Cup
So the first round of the FA Cup is upon us, the day when all the minnows of football dream of a plum draw against the mighty , dragon slaying, great day out - lots of money! Unlike the League Cup, which quite frankly few people give a damn about now, there's something special about the FA Cup. Today Argyle host Evostik Premier club Stourbridge, who undoubtedly are looking for an upset - and Argyle should not take them lightly given their own position and form.

Mickey Mouse Cup

The FA Cup, the greatest cup game in the football league, and yet Argyle treat it as a hindrance rather than an opportunity. The Greens don't have a good history of cup games, usually losing in the first game they play (except for some exceptional years), and yet even though they've dropped out of the automatic 3rd round entry, they can't even muster up enough passion to get past round 1. Pathetic. A terrible performance, that once again was hampered by ill discipline in the squad when Parratt got a straight red, who should receive the same derision as N'Gala and Arnasson. There is very little to be said and many of the Green Army will feel they wasted valuable time and money today. Argyle play Exeter in the JPT on Tuesday, the first time the teams have met in years, and now such a result will hang like a black rain cloud over the game. Expect another loss.

3rd Round Bore
The 3rd round FA Cup draw will see Argyle play Newcastle at home. Now a few years ago this would have been an attractive fixture, but seeing as the Toon are now in the Championship, we've played them once already at theirs and they're due to come down once already, I don't really see anything that exciting. Some say it'll increase the gate, but if people come to see Newcastle win in the Cup, why should they come and see them win in the league? Either way I don't see the revenue from what will no doubt be Argyle's only FA Cup game being anything to get worked up about. Mind you it'll be a fair 'ol poke for 'em won't it - twice!

Well it's over, no more than was expected but a great day out for Plucky Plymouth.
9,000 Green Army members made the mass exodus journey to The Emirates, the largest away crowd to grace the new stadium, proven by the lack of facilities - the Gunners had to open parts of the ground that had not been used before, and the lack of sufficient toilets caused a talking point and a bone of contention when many fans missed three goals due to queuing. As were the travel arrangements of coaches littering the surrounding streets and Tube stations closures, London were not prepared for 48 coaches, 1 official train, 1 extra express train provided by First Great Western plus numerous other regular service trains and countless other vehicles converging from across the country.
The Arsenal were expecting to totally run roughshod over the small club and were very annoyed to be drawing 0-0 going into the break due to the remarkable skills of keeper Larrieu. They soon turned that round by scoring 2 within minutes of restart, one being an own goal by new loanee and débutante, Gray. Whatever mistake he made, he immediately took the ball up the other end and allowed the skipper to start the Green come back. Much to the angry annoyance of the Gooners supporters. Things started to come apart for the Pilgrims in the second half as Arsenal went on to stick the knife in with a third, ending the game. But it was more than anyone expected.
Sturrock made 6 changes to the team that he fielded against Cardiff, including his newest player, Gray along with McNamee, Gallagher (who picked up an injury forcing his substitution) with Folly and MacLean warming the bench, and it worked fairly well.
But now the magic is over. Time to concentrate on the league. (Ha!)

What's this? A train? To the Emirates? Is it true?
It's quite unprecidented in this day and age for a club to charter a train to a match, but Argyle are ruuning a charter train from Plymouth to Finsbury Park (the nearest station to the Emirates), departing at 8am from Plymouth and 6pm from London.
Tickets cost £50 adult and £45 under 16 (accompanied only)

Tickets will cost between £32.50 and £46 depending on where in the Emirates you are located.
If you have a GREEN SEASON TICKET for the GRANDSTAND or MAYFLOWER RESERVED SEATING, you must get your ticket on Sunday 7 December (10am - 4pm) or Monday 8 December (9am - 5pm).
If you have a GREEN SEASON TICKET for BLOCKS 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 you must get your ticket on Tuesday 9th December (10am - 4pm) and Wednesday 10th December (10am - 6pm).

The Biggest Game

So Argyle have drawn Arsenal in what is the biggest game in recent years, is it a good draw? Well there's probably zero chance of progession and as it's away no extra gate receipts. So probably not. But it'll give people a day out to see a big team. Ticket details are yet to be confirmed.

Young Guns Having some Fun
Plymouth Argyle 1 - 4 Manchester City (FAYC quarter final)
Argyle's youth team had their hopes of a semi final place in the Youth Cup dashed by a 4-1 defeat against Manchester City at Home park yesterday.
The chance of reaching the semis for the first time ever fell on the heads of the young guys when they won 3-2 against Birmingham last month, however progression was not in the minds of the gods as Argyle trailed 2-0 at half time. They went a further 2 goals down in front of a large attendance before Jarred Stevens scored the consolation.
It's great to see that Argyle are developing a youth team capable of getting so far in such a competition. The youth have seen a vast array of changes in recent years, some have caused consternation amongst the supporters who have funded parts of the development, but we should be proud of these guys.

A psychic predicted "goal, goal and thrice goal" on Sparksy's breakfast show and she was right, though few would have thought that one would go Argyle's way.
The game had barely settled before new signing Clark put the ball past England keeper David James, who harbours ambitions of playing for the mighty Greens on day. If any Pilgrim had come expecting a loss, there was no doubt that the Greens would be getting something out of this game and giant-slaying was a possibility. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. Argyle made their usual mistakes, and whilst they can by and large get away with them against Championship teams, Portsmouth capitalised and scored twice. If the referee hadn't have been so wet and disregareded the penalties then maybe a draw (or a win) would have been on the cards. But unfortunately once the first had gone in, Pompey were on the up and seized every opportunity to make up for being shut out early in the game.

Plymouth Argyle 3 (Abdou 23, Halmosi 26, Ebanks-Blake 58) - 2 Hull City (Windass 52, Windass 60) FAC3
Argyle are now making a habit of being in a cup longer than a teabag following a nail-biting match verses Championship rivals Hull City. In typical FA Cup play, Argyle looked much stronger and better organised than verses Cardiff for the first half at least, not least due to the changes imposed by Sturrock namely McCormick replacing Larrieu, Martin for Norris (ill), Nallis and Summerfield starting, and Doumbe for Timar (injured). The game ran mostly in first gear until the 23rd minute when a poorly struck ball from Hull following a free kick fell to Abdou who managed to steer it past the keeper. The Green Army had barely sat down before Halmosi netted the ball again straight from a free kick that was missed by Seip and thankfully Hull's guardian. By now Argyle had got into their stride and Hull had begun to wake up, culminating in a fantastic double save my McCormick on the stroke of half time.
It was Windass again who turned the game, maybe just the thought of him starting the second half scared Argyle, but they were not as spiritedly as before, and the midfield at time had nipped off for a tea break. It's no surprise then that Windass scored both of Hull's goals, but not before Halmosi set Ebanks-Blake up to make it 3-1. Even so it was Hull who looked more likely to score an equaliser than Argyle push further ahead, until Jutkiewicz shot hit the woodwork nearing the end.
So Argyle have, for the second time in as many seasons progressed beyond their first FA Cup tie and it will remain to see whether they have the legs to equal or beat their run last season. As always the argument between cup and league will rear its head; with Argyle's small (and getting smaller) squad, we shall wait and see.
The draw for the 4th round will be made on Monday at 13.30 with the match to be played on Saturady 26 January.
